Below is a comprehensive list of the engine maintenance services we offer
Check Engine Light
No one likes to see their car's "Check Engine" light come on. The light could mean a costly problem, like a bad catalytic converter, or it could be something minor, like a loose gas cap. At Hitchcock Automotive Repair, we can pull the code and diagnose the problem for you. Give us a call at 941-306-1000 or stop by the shop for our expert assistance.
Fuel Injection
Fuel injection is a system for admitting fuel into an engine. Since 1990, fuel injectors have completely replaced carburetors as the primary means of getting gasoline into the engine. A fuel injector atomizes the fuel by forcibly pumping it through a small nozzle (under high pressure). Failure of the fuel injection system means poor performance and ultimately destroys the engine.
Ignition
Your vehicle's ignition system is responsible for starting the engine by delivering an electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Issues can involve a worn ignition switch, a faulty ignition coil or broken or corroded wiring. These problems can lead to symptoms like the engine failing to start, intermittent stalling, dashboard warning lights, or even complete power loss while driving.
Ignition Wires & Cables
These vital parts transfer the spark from the ignition coil to spark plugs that ignite the mixture of fuel and air. The mixture starts the engine. Over time, ignition wires and cables get weak and break down. This makes it impossible for the spark to reach the engine cylinders. This results in the engine misfiring. Common symptoms of faulty ignition cables and wires are: poor gas mileage, engine misfires, engine light is on, and engine vibration.
Oil, Lube, and Filter
To keep running smoothly, your car highly relies on oil, lube, and oil filters. Oil helps in lubricating, cooling, and cleaning the internal engine components. With time, motor oil becomes contaminated. Your car needs an oil, lube, and filter change every three months (or 3,000 miles) in order to function optimally.
Spark Plugs
A spark plug delivers electric current to the combustion chamber from the ignition system. Spark plugs that haven't been changed for a long time can cause ignition problems. At Hitchcock Automotive Repair, we have automotive experts who will check and replace your spark plugs. For all your spark plug repair or replacement needs, call 941-306-1000 or visit Hitchcock Automotive Repair today.
Spark Plug Related FAQs
How do you know when a spark plug needs to be replaced?
The most common sign that a spark plug needs replacing is an engine that hesitates during acceleration. Other warning signs may include engine misfires during startup, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel economy, and engine knocking.
What else should I replace when replacing spark plugs?
If you're considering having your vehicle's spark plugs replaced, there's a good chance the spark plug wires should be replaced as well. Ignition wires become brittle over time, and worn wires can lead to engine misfires, poor performance, and reduced fuel economy.
Check Engine Light FAQs
What could cause a check engine light to come on?
Come by Hitchcock Automotive Repair and we can diagnose the reasons for a check engine light turning on. It can range from something serious like a faulty catalytic converter or potential engine failure to something simple like a loose gas cap or the need for a routine 50,000- or 100,000-mile manufacturer maintenance service.
Is it okay to drive with the engine light on?
The short answer is no. The longer explanation is that the light may indicate a serious engine problem, and continuing to drive as if nothing is wrong could result in much more expensive repairs. A check engine light means you should have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible by a professional at Hitchcock Automotive Repair in Sarasota.
What is the most common problem with my check engine light?
A loose gas cap is one of the most common reasons a check engine light comes on. However, the best way to determine the exact cause is to have a technician at Hitchcock Automotive Repair read the diagnostic code stored in your vehicle's onboard OBD computer.
What does a solid check engine light mean?
A steady check engine light generally indicates a non-emergency issue that still needs attention. Come by Hitchcock Automotive Repair and we'll help diagnose and resolve the problem before it becomes more serious.
What does an intermittent flashing check engine light mean?
A flashing check engine light is a warning of a potentially severe problem that requires immediate attention. Get your vehicle to an auto repair shop as quickly as possible, or safely park it and arrange for a tow to your preferred repair facility to avoid further engine damage.

What Our Customers Are Saying
Scott at Hitchcock Auto is amazing! I came in last minute & needed help with my car, he took it in upon arrival & was able to figure out the problem & fix the problem in less than an hour. Honest & reliable car shop! This is my go to!
Forgive me as it has been some time since I was there, but about a month ago I was getting ready to head over to Orlando for work training from Sarasota. I pulled out of my driveway and my power steering was gone. I immediately drove to the only auto repair shop I have been to since living out here and they were too busy to help me. I started to google shops around me and Hitchcock Automotive came up. I made my way over and they had space and time to help me out right away. Scott Sr. (I believe was his name) was super kind (which I usually find uncommon as a woman looking to get her car fixed) and he reassured me it was an easy fix. The ?o-ring? had completely broken a piece off and they got my car up and cleaned up and replaced the ring within 20-30 min. I expressed my thanks and asked how much I owed and he told me it was on them and not to worry about it. Believe me I was worried about it. I never know how much mechanics are going to charge me and I couldn?t believe he did all of that for free. It was probably an easy little fix for them, but it was a huge fix to my day and restored a part of my faith in kindness. Thank you guys seriously. You had no idea how helpful that was to me when I needed it. Many thanks and will be back for any future car troubles. I highly recommend making this your first stop with auto repairs. A trustworthy team, quality work, and a safe and clean space. 10/10 guys.
I was looking for a good auto repair shop for my Lexus when I found Hitchcock Automotive mentioned several times on Next Door. I called and brought my car in with a list of items that needed to be repaired and asked if they would give me an estimate. While I waited, they looked the car over , gave me a very good price on the repairs and offered to do the work that day or the next, based on my convenience. I am very happy with the work that was done on my car and quite impressed with the customer service of Hitchcock Automotive. What a great find! Just an update to my last review because I know people are always looking for a good auto mechanic. My husband and I have used Hitchcock Automotive several times now for my Lexus RX 350 and his Jeep and we are extremely happy with their service. Scott, the owner, is just great! He runs a very efficient shop where the work is done on time and in line with the estimate. We have never had to bring anything back for an adjustment. Scott explains what needs to be done and , just as importantly, what doesn?t need to be done. When we bring our cars in for service, we know that the work will be done correctly and that we will be treated in a professional and courteous manner.
I couldn't speak more highly of this family owned and operated shop! They were honest, reasonable, good people. I will be recommending them to everyone I know! I came in with a muffler issue, they could have looked at me and assumed they could make some good money off of me by telling me I needed an all new muffler installed. Instead they brought me into the garage showed me the exact problem along with their recommendation and were able to easily fix the problem with very little cost to me. Five stars ? Thank you for being one of the good ones!!
